Your Memories Deserve a Second Life
For decades, video tapes captured some of life’s most important moments. Family holidays, weddings, birthdays, school performances and special occasions were recorded and stored on magnetic tape.
Unfortunately, video tape was never designed to last forever. As tapes age, the magnetic recording can deteriorate, picture quality can decline and compatible playback equipment becomes increasingly difficult to find.
Able Video professionally transfers ageing video tapes into modern digital formats, helping you preserve, watch and share those recordings for years to come.
Why Transfer Your Tapes?
Transferring video tapes to digital reduces your dependence on old machines and makes your recordings far easier to protect and enjoy.
Benefits of digital transfer include:
- Protecting important family and historical recordings
- Reducing the risk of deterioration and permanent loss
- Watching recordings on modern televisions and computers
- Sharing copies with family and friends
- Creating backups on USB drives and hard drives
- Organising large tape collections into accessible digital files

Understanding Video Tape Technology
Video tapes store sound and pictures as magnetic information on a thin strip of coated plastic film. During recording, video and audio signals are written as magnetic patterns across the surface of the tape.
During playback, the tape moves through a video recorder while rapidly rotating heads read those magnetic patterns and convert them back into visible pictures and sound.
This technology was extremely effective, but magnetic tape is vulnerable to age, heat, humidity, dust, mould, magnetic interference and mechanical wear. Over time, recordings may develop colour changes, visual noise, unstable pictures, audio dropouts or complete signal loss.
Professional digitisation captures the remaining information from the tape and converts it into a digital video file before further deterioration occurs.
Video Tape Formats We Transfer
We support a wide selection of consumer and professional video tape formats.
VHS
The most widely used home video format of the 1980s and 1990s. VHS collections often contain family events, television recordings and important personal archives.
VHS-C
A compact version of VHS commonly used in handheld camcorders. VHS-C tapes contain the same type of magnetic recording technology in a smaller cassette.
MiniDV
A compact digital tape format used in consumer, educational and professional camcorders. MiniDV can provide excellent results when transferred using correctly maintained equipment.
Video8
An early compact camcorder format developed for smaller and more portable cameras. Video8 was widely used for family and travel recordings.
Hi8
An improved analogue version of Video8 offering better resolution and sound. Hi8 tapes remain common in family, corporate and community archives.
Digital8
A Sony digital format recorded onto Video8-style cassettes. Digital8 requires compatible equipment to access and transfer the original digital recording.
Our Video Transfer Process
01. Assessment
We identify each tape format and visually assess its external condition before playback.
02. Playback
Your tape is played through appropriate equipment selected for its specific recording format.
03. Digitisation
The video and audio signals are captured and converted into a modern digital video file.
04. Delivery
Your completed files are supplied using the agreed digital storage or delivery method.
Video Tapes Are Not Permanent
Many home video tapes are now several decades old. Even tapes that have been stored carefully can suffer from magnetic signal degradation, colour fading, audio dropouts, mould, tape sticking and physical damage.
Once information has disappeared from the magnetic surface, it may not be recoverable. Transferring your tapes now gives you the best opportunity to protect the recordings that still remain.
